Understanding the AS 2550.9 10-Year Rule for Commercial Hoists
Many workshop owners mistakenly assume that annual servicing is sufficient for the lifetime of a hoist. However, AS 2550.9 specifically distinguishes between routine annual maintenance and the mandatory 10-Year Major Assessment. Operating a hoist past its 10-year anniversary without a formal major assessment declaration exposes business owners to severe WorkSafe penalties, potential personal liability, and total voiding of insurance coverage in the event of equipment failure.
A proper major assessment cannot be performed purely through external visual inspection. The hoist lifting carriages, telescoping arms, and pivot pins must be disassembled. High-stress welds are cleaned and subjected to Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) — typically Magnetic Particle Testing (MPI) or Dye Penetrant Testing (DPT) — to uncover sub-surface stress fractures invisible to the naked eye.
